Woody Allen: “Cancel Culture Is a Dumb Thing”

Renowned Director’s Fierce Reaction to Actors No Longer Willing to Work With Him

Woody Allen, the famous director and writer, spoke in a rare and detailed interview with The Wall Street Journal about the sexual abuse allegations against his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, and expressed his explicit views on what he calls “cancel culture.”

Allen, who has repeatedly denied the allegations that he molested Dylan when she was seven years old, once again insisted on his innocence in the interview. In response to being sidelined by many Hollywood stars, he called cancel culture “just plain dumb.”

In the conversation, Allen stated: “If an actor says, ‘I won’t work with him,’ basically, the actor is thinking, ‘I’m doing a good thing,’ from his point of view, ‘I’m making a contribution, I’m making a statement.’ But he’s really making a mistake. Maybe someday he’ll learn that.”

In response, Dylan Farrow, in a statement to The Wall Street Journal, insisted on her position and said: “I am sick and tired of the misogynistic and unscientific narrative that I was coached or brainwashed. Far from it, this is a truth I reported as a child and have continued to recount consistently since. I am a forty-year-old woman and I was sexually assaulted by Woody Allen.

Despite Allen still insisting on his innocence, he admitted that many actors, including Michael Caine, Colin Firth, and Greta Gerwig, have announced they will no longer work with him. He isn’t angry about it, but says: “I would think they would have more common sense. What always surprises me is how ready and willing people are to embrace these narratives.”

Interestingly, Allen’s new novel, titled “What’s With Baum,” has many similarities to his own personal life; a character who has a failed third marriage, relationships with younger women, and career blunders. Allen says about this: “A number of things that have happened in my life, I throw them in whatever I’m working on.
